Art Connects

Art Connects is a community-engaged art project where Aphotic connects professional artists with seniors and elders through artistic collaboration. Art Connects aims to bring these two demographics together by providing a chance for new connection, healing, knowledge exchange and creation of new work.

Art Connects has run for two successful iterations, and is preparing for its third.

Art Connects 1

The initial pilot version of Art Connects worked in partnership with two seniors homes: Churchill House in North Vancouver and South Granville Park Lodge in Vancouver with the aim to create a bridge between four professional artists and four selected residents through an artistic collaboration. The process was documented and turned into a 15-minutes documentary short film which has screened internationally.

The second iteration expanded to include an Indigenous cohort of artists and elders living outside urban areas. The Indigenous cohort was led by Jada Gabrielle-Pape and observed its own set of cultural protocols. Art Connects 2 engaged 10 artists and 10 seniors/elders and culminated in a final exchange which was documented and turned into a 28-minute documentary film.

Art Connects 3

Aphotic is ramping up to do its third iteration of Art Connects. This round we will, again, have two cohorts, one in partnership with Casa Mia by The Care Group, a government subsidized residential care facility for seniors, as well as an Indigenous cohort in partnership with the Musqueam Nation led by Musqueam artist and facilitator Quelemia Sparrow. This initiative will be documented and turned into an 8 episode series.
